History of Jodhpur

Jodhpur, known as the “Blue City” because of the blue-painted houses in its old town, was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput chief of the Rathore clan. The city was the capital of the Marwar kingdom and became a key trading hub for the silk, opium, and sandalwood routes. Jodhpur’s strategic location near the Thar Desert made it an important center for trade and defense.

Today, Jodhpur’s rich cultural and historical heritage is showcased through its forts, palaces, and temples. The imposing Mehrangarh Fort stands as a reminder of the city’s royal past, while its vibrant markets reflect the local traditions.
